Olive Leaf Extract and Herpes
Did you know that as many as 90% of us have been exposed to this viral infection? And most people who have it show no symptoms! Most of the research on olive leaf’s anti-viral properties has come from studies on viruses of which herpes is a common one.
The mechanism of olive leaf antiviral activity is reported to include:
- An ability to interfere with critical amino acid production essential for viruses. Shown to kill oral and genital herpes virus and herpes zoster virus (shingles/chicken pox).
- As a treatment for herpes with the ability to contain viral infection and/or spread by inactivating viruses or by preventing virus shedding, budding, or assembly at the cell membrane.
- Ability to directly penetrate infected cells and stop the symptoms of herpes by shutting down viral replication in male & female herpes and mild herpes simplex, zoster, type 1 and type 2.
How Olive Leaf Helps Herpes
Studies have shown that olive leaf provides a wide range of health benefits, but one of the most effective uses for the leaf is in the fight against herpes viruses. Olive leaf not only helps prevent herpes outbreaks, but it can also prevent the spread of the virus and actually can even kill the virus on the spot.
OLIFE naturally contains over 200 milligrams of Hydroxytyrosol which may increase physical efficiency and improve attention. OLIFE 1000 ml contains 93% of (OLIVUM®), our exclusive olive tree leaves’ water infusion rich in Oleuropein, Elenolic Acid, Rutin, Tyrosol and the efficient antioxidant Hydroxytirosol.
It has been scientifically recognized that these molecules have the following effects: antioxidant, antiradical, regulate arterial pressure, improve blood circulation, energizing, hypoglycaemic, lower cholesterol, metabolize lipids and carbohydrates.
How Does It Work?
The anti-viral activity of olive leaf extract is due to the action of oleuropein on the protein coat of the virus. It is thought to inactivate bacteria by dissolving the outer lining of the microbe. It interferes with viral infection and spread by inactivating the virus or preventing virus budding or shedding.
Oleuropein can penetrate infected cells directly and stop viral replication without affecting the host cell. Olive leaf extract stimulates phagocytosis — the action of immune cells engulfing and destroying microbes. Through the interference of amino acid processes of microbes and the stimulation of the immune response, olive leaf extract can prevent the onset, and assist the recovery from, colds, flu, and a range of viruses; yeast, fungal and mould problems; bacterial infections; and parasites.
Dr Morton Walker, in his book Olive Leaf Extract, expresses his high opinion of olive leaf extract. He states that “No single treatment was known to work against any of the superpotent microbial invaders — viruses, antibiotic-resistant bacteria, yeasts, fungi, protozoa, worms — until now”.
Olive Leaf Extract as a Natural Cure for Herpes
The first olive leaf study was conducted in 1969. Dr Harold Renis was working for the Upjohn Company (now owned by Pfizer) and was doing a lot of research into the therapeutic benefits of olive leaf extract (OLE). Once this pharmaceutical company realized the astonishing health benefits of olive leaf extract, they tried to obtain a patent on it and claim it as a drug. Of course they were unsuccessful (how can you get a patent on a natural substance).
In the study, researchers looked at the effects of calcium elenolate on several viruses in vitro. The herpes virus was one of the viruses studied. It was found that the olive leaf extract was highly effective at removing the virus from the area and killing it. This positive relationship indicates that olive leaf extract can be an effective treatment for herpes.
In 1992, French biologists “found that all of the herpes viruses were inhibited, killed, or cured by extracts from olive leaf”. Their findings were also backed up by the citing of 28 references on the anti-viral qualities of Oleuropein in their report.
Olive leaf advocate, Dr. James Privitera, has given OLE to many of his patients infected with the herpes simplex virus and seen some remarkable results. One of his male patients experienced frequent lesions, along with constant fatigue for many years after becoming infected. But within a week of taking OLE his lesions disappeared and his energy levels increased dramatically. He even wrote to Dr. Privitera to say that olive leaf was the only medicine that eliminated his herpes. He stated… “Even the most minute blisters are totally gone!”. 2
And in a 1993 private herpes study of six participants, all reported symptomatic relief and three of the subjects said their lesions were completely gone within 48 hours from treatment with olive leaf extract. The icing on the cake was all six participants said this option produced far better results than medications they have previously used such as Acyclovir, Zorvirax, and Valtrex.

Olive Leaf Anti-Viral Properties
The olive leaf has antiviral properties, giving it the ability to treat the common cold and dangerous viruses, including candida symptoms, meningitis, pneumonia, chronic fatigue syndrome, hepatitis B, malaria, gonorrhea and tuberculosis; it also treats dental, ear and urinary tract infections and is a natural treatment for shingles.
Research shows that olive leaf extracts effectively fight against a number of disease-causing microbes, including some viruses that cause influenza and other respiratory infections. The powerful compounds found in olive leaves destroy invading organisms and don’t allow viruses to replicate and cause an infection. In fact, the olive leaf is so beneficial to our health that treatment with olive leaf extracts reversed many HIV-1 infection-associated changes in a study done at the New York University School of Medicine.
The olive leaf extract exhibits antiviral activity against viral haemorrhagic septicaemia rhabdovirus (VHSV): “Therefore, we propose that O. europaea could be used as a potential source of promising natural antivirals, which have demonstrated to lack impact on health and environment. In addition, Ole could be used to design other related antiviral agents.”
In a U.S. patent, it has been claimed that oleuropein has potent antiviral activities against herpes mononucleosis, hepatitis virus, rotavirus, bovine rhinovirus, canine parvovirus, and feline leukemia virus. Studies have also shown that oleuropein exhibits a significant antiviral activity against respiratory syncytial virus and para-influenza type 3 virus.
In vitro antimicrobial activity of olive leaves: “We investigated the antimicrobial effect of olive leaves against bacteria and fungi. The microorganisms tested were inoculated in various concentrations of olive leaf water extract. Olive leaf 0.6% (w/v) water extract killed almost all bacteria tested, within 3 hours.”
